Waterrijk Westfriesland has everything for a great day at, on or in the water. Swim in the IJsselmeer from the beaches, cast your fishing rod in the inland waters, sail on the nicest sailing boats or enjoy the view and the many recreational boats from the shore.
Westfriesland is surrounded by water on three sides. Along the Westfriese Omringdijk, you can cycle or walk along the IJsselmeer coast from town to town, from harbour to harbour and from beach to beach. Visit the Enkhuizerzand leisure area, the Vooroever between Enkhuizen and Medemblik , and Hoorn city beach. Or opt for the inland waterways at the Streekbos, Nesbos or Egboetswater leisure areas.

The 17th century comes to life in the characteristic harbours of Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen. In those days, a great deal of international trade was conducted here by water. The harbours form the gateway to the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer. An ideal base for water-based leisure activities or a sailing holiday. Spend the night on your own sailing boat in the harbour or book accommodation in the town centre. You’ll find the historic town centres and all the amenities within walking distance.

Fancy travelling by water to another part of the Netherlands? Make use of the ferry service. During the summer months, comfortable ferries will take you to Stavoren or Urk and back again. The passenger ship ‘De Zuiderzee’ operates the crossing from Enkhuizen to Urk. The ferry service was the only link to the mainland when Urk was still an island. ‘De Zuiderzee’ keeps this historic crossing alive and also offers fully catered packages on board.

Water sports enthusiasts can have a great time along the West Frisian coast. It’s a true paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers. The Nesbos on the Vooroever near Medemblik and the Uiterdijk near Schellinkhout are authorised kitesurfing spots. Want to learn to kitesurf? Visit the Zuiderzee Museum
We can never get enough of West Frisian water. We celebrate this in July and August in Hoorn, Medemblik, Opmeer and Stede Broec – in, on and along the water. Naturally, there’ll be sporting activities for young and old alike. From dragon boat races to sailing clinics, from swimming relays to water balloon races. Don’t fancy getting wet? The Krabbersgat full of Klippers – a magnificent sight! In October, Enkhuizen serves as the backdrop for the Dutch Hard Sailing Championship for Klippers for three days. This thrilling race consists of two parts. The Three Cities Race takes in the towns of Medemblik, Stavoren and Urk. The start and finish are in Enkhuizen. A spectacular event for both participants and spectators.

Sailing, waiting, cooking, eating and sleeping for 24 hours, whilst covering as many miles as possible. That is the 24-hour race held at the end of August. It is the largest sailing event in the Netherlands, with around 400 cabin cruisers taking part. The starting harbours are on the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer, with the finish in Medemblik. Food and drink, live music and an enthusiastic crowd await the boats in this charming harbour town. Let’s party!
