Grease quiff, gabber outfit or smartphone. Every generation does it their own way.
From hooligans on mopeds to dances on TikTok. In the exhibition ‘Jong! Youth Cultures from Hooligans to TikTok’, you’ll journey through over seventy years of youth culture in the Netherlands.
See how young people have distinguished themselves through music, clothing, hairstyles and language since the 1950s. Because being young changes. The desire for freedom and a sense of individuality simply remains the same.
From leather jackets to low-rise trousersIn the 1950s, the ‘nozems’ appeared on the streets. With their slicked-back quiffs, leather jackets and mopeds at the ready. This was followed by beat music, miniskirts, long hair and the ‘provo’ movement.
The journey continues through disco and punk, past Walkmans, video tapes and the ‘Doe Maar’ craze. And, of course, past gabbers, skaters, flippo’s, TMF and MTV. Sound familiar? Then you’ll probably find yourself right back in your own youth here.

Open MSN. Grab your smartphone. The noughties are also covered. With Hyves, MSN, MP3 players and trousers that sometimes hung suspiciously low. After that, young people’s lives shifted increasingly towards the smartphone. Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, festivals and TikTok took over.
New media, same story. Young people seek each other out, assert their independence and decide for themselves what looks good – or, indeed, what their parents find absolutely dreadful.
More than just a touch of nostalgiaYou’ll find clothes, mopeds, books, toys, games, magazines and old television memories. Plenty to spark stories between children, parents and grandparents.
But the exhibition looks beyond hairstyles and hit songs. You’ll also discover how freedom, technology, upbringing and the media have changed over the years. What used to happen in the school playground now takes place just as easily online.
