At the Medemblik War Museum, you can view the Second World War from two perspectives. You’ll discover the lives of civilians as well as the military conflict. Not just behind display cases, but through stories, recreated environments and interactive experiences.
What was daily life like during the war? And what military efforts were required to liberate Europe?
In the museum, you can discover this through three exhibitions. In ‘Choices in Almersdorp’, you walk through a covered village in 1940s style. You’ll pass, amongst other things, a grocery shop, a classroom, a printing shop and a traditional pub. Personal stories illustrate the choices people were faced with.
‘The Road to Freedom’ focuses on the military aspect. Among other things, you’ll discover lesser-known operations, logistics and the construction of emergency bridges. The route through this exhibition covers around 900 square metres.
The third exhibition, ‘A Broken Home’, explores the impact of war on people, families and identity.

The Experience Tours take you on an interactive journey through history. For example,‘Keuzes’ in Almersdorp is based on an escape room concept. You complete tasks whilst discovering the stories behind the war. An Experience Tour can also be booked at ‘Weg naar Vrijheid’.

More than just a visit to a museumThe Medemblik War Museum organises lectures and events throughout the year. Group packages are also available. Sometimes you can even go on a trip in a historic army lorry, for example during a heritage tour visiting sites from the Second World War.
