The locomotive whistles. The stoker shovels coal onto the fire. And you? You hop on board. On the Hoorn-Medemblik Museum Steam Tram, you’ll travel through the West Frisian countryside in historic carriages. Past meadows, villages and old stations. Not fast, but a lot more fun.
The railway line between Hoorn and Medemblik dates back to 1887. Many station buildings, bridges and other parts of the line have been preserved. So it is not just the tram that is historic; the entire route is part of the experience.
Hop on in HoornThe journey usually begins at the historic Hoorn Tram Station, next to the regular NS station. Before setting off, take a moment to have a look around. You’ll discover the history of the Dutch steam tram, explore the interactive exhibition ‘The Timeline’ and see a working signal box.
The steam locomotive then sets off for Medemblik. Along the way, the tram stops at various historic stations. The journey takes you right through the open West Frisian countryside. Steam billowing from the pipe, the wind in your hair.

From Hoorn , you can travel by steam tram to Medemblik. There, you board the museum ship Friesland. This classic ferry, built in 1956, sails across the IJsselmeer to Enkhuizen. The route can also be taken in the opposite direction, starting from the harbour in Enkhuizen.
Fancy taking in even more history? Extend your day trip with a visit to the Zuiderzee Museum or the Bakery Museum. That’ll keep you busy all day – and well fed, too.
Great for young travellersJust sitting still and looking out of the window? Not at all. During various trips, children can take part in the Steam Safari. Armed with a safari suitcase and a travel guide, they discover what’s happening along the tracks as they travel. During school holidays, there are regular extra activities for children. The Museum Steam Tram also organises themed trips and events throughout the year.

Yes, the Museum Steam Tram is suitable for families. Children can take part in the Steam Safari during various trips. During school holidays, there are often extra activities for young travellers.
Access to the steam tram is limited for wheelchair users. A wheelchair may only be brought on board if it is folded away, and the passenger must be able to negotiate three steps unaided. The Friesland Museum Ship does, however, have a stairlift. Please contact us in advance to discuss the options.
