The Lely Pumping Station stands firmly on the shores of the IJsselmeer, just north of Medemblik. Since 1930, this electric pumping station has helped to keep the Wieringermeer dry. Large, white and straight out of the era of the Zuiderzee Works. Not a thing of beauty. Just engineering that still works.

For those who love hydraulic engineering, dykes and large functional buildings. Also lovely for cyclists and walkers heading from Medemblik towards the Omringdijk. You don’t come here for the crowds. You come here for the views, the engineering and a solid slice of polder history.

You’ll see a large white pumping station on the dyke, designed by architect Dirk Roosenburg. The building was constructed around 1930 for the reclamation of the Wieringermeer. Together with the Leemans pumping station near Den Oever, Lely pumped the water out of the new polder. And that work is not yet complete: the pumping station still keeps the Wieringermeer dry.

The Lely Pumping Station is situated on Zuiderdijkweg, just north of Medemblik. It is an operational pumping station run by the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board. So don’t expect free entry or a standard museum visit. You’ll mainly view it from the outside and from the dyke. Information on parking, dogs, accessibility and indoor visits isn’t clearly provided in the visitor information. Check the website in advance if you’re coming specifically to see the pumping station.
