De Zwarte Schuur is situated on the West Frisian Omringdijk. A sturdy wooden dyke storehouse dating from 1923, right on the shores of the Markermeer. Sandbags, poles and sails were once kept here, ready for use. Everything needed to keep the dyke firmly in place. Now it sleeps up to six people. The dyke can look after itself for the time being.
Historic on the outside, quirky on the insideThe dark wooden façades and the high red roof are visible from afar. Inside, the dyke warehouse has been given a whole new lease of life. Its rugged, functional character has been retained, whilst modern design, warm materials and a generous dose of comfort have been added.

Downstairs, you’ll find a spacious kitchen-diner where you can cook together and enjoy long meals. Afterwards, you can relax by the pellet stove. Upstairs there is a large bedroom and two king-size box beds. You’ll also find a bathroom, a lounge area and a workspace. With views over the Markermeer, you might find it a bit harder to concentrate on work here.
The last dyke warehouseDe Zwarte Schuur is the last remaining dyke storehouse along the Westfriese Omringdijk in Westfriesland. From the seventeenth century onwards, hundreds of these storehouses stood along Dutch dykes. They provided storage space as well as a warm place for dyke wardens.
The restoration was carried out using sustainable and circular methods wherever possible. Materials used included flax insulation, linseed oil and locally sourced materials. So, it’s historic heritage, but not stuck in the past.
A haven for those seeking peace and quietAt the front, you look out over the dyke. At the back, the Markermeer lies almost at your feet. You can stroll straight into nature or head out along the Omringdijk. Don’t fancy a packed programme? That’s fine too. Stay indoors, light the fire and grab a game.
The accommodation is intended for adults and those seeking peace and quiet. Pets and smoking are not permitted. Groups of young people are also not welcome here. The barn can be booked for a weekend or a week.
