Sand between your toes, the Markermeer right in front of you. Hoorn’s city beach is within walking distance of the town centre and is the largest city beach in the Netherlands. You come here for a swim, a walk or simply to gaze out over the water for a while.
Who is this a good site for?
For families with young children. For walkers who enjoy strolling along the water’s edge. For sports enthusiasts looking to go for a run. And for anyone who wants to get away from the city for a while without actually leaving it.
When will you visit here?
It’s a lovely spot on a warm summer’s day. But it’s just as lovely on a cool evening too. Then the Markermeer slowly takes on the colours of the sky and the beach becomes a lot quieter.
What to expect.
You can feel the sand beneath your feet and hear the water lapping against the stones. Children are climbing on the play ship or playing along the water’s edge. Further along, people are jumping into the water from the jetty. From the viewing hill, you can look out over the beach, the town and the Markermeer. And all the while, boats glide peacefully past.

Practical information
A walk here takes between half an hour and an hour. On a sunny day, you’ll soon find yourself lingering longer. Along the beach there are walking and cycling paths, sports fields and various play areas. There are cafés and restaurants such as Strandpaviljoen Reuring and Het Hop for coffee, lunch or a drink. Dogs are not permitted on the sandy beach or in the play areas. They are allowed on the walking paths, provided they are kept on a lead. There is a dog-off-lead area on the south side. The beach is largely accessible to wheelchairs and walking frames and has a paved path leading right up to the water’s edge.
