The Drommedaris is impressive from the outside, but it’s only when you step inside that you discover just how many stories this tower has to tell. The period details, narrow staircases and the view over the harbour make a visit truly special. Combine it with a performance or a film, and you’ll experience the Drommedaris at its very best.
Yes, but the Drommedaris does not have fixed opening hours for general viewing. You can view the interior of the building during a film, performance or other activity. Guided tours of the historic tower can also be booked for groups. Please check the programme and current opening hours in advance.
The Drommedaris was built in 1540 as a city gate and defence tower. The tower guarded the harbours and overlooked what was then the Zuiderzee. Later, the building served, amongst other things, as a prison, a storage facility and a telegraph office.
Nowadays, the Drommedaris is a cultural centre featuring theatre, music, cabaret and lectures. At the top of the tower, you’ll also find a cinema. So the old defence tower is still very much in use, but it’s a lot more welcoming than it used to be.
