The Stofmolen is a corn mill in Wijdenes. According to tradition, its name derives from ‘stuivertjes’ (small coins). These were used to pay for the first mill. ‘Stuifmolen’ became ‘Stofmolen’. Sometimes language simply blows in a different direction.

Allow for a short stop if you’re just viewing the mill from the outside. If the mill is open to the public or turning, you’ll naturally find yourself staying a little longer. Parking is available in the surrounding area, depending on your route. The mill is owned by the municipality Drechterland. You can only visit the interior when the mill is open to the public.
Tips in Westfriesland
Combine a visit to De Stofmolen with a cycle route through Wijdenes and along the dyke. Schellinkhout and Hoorn are also nearby, offering more heritage and water-based attractions. Do check the opening times of any other places you’d like to visit beforehand.

De Stofmolen is a historic corn mill in Wijdenes. The current mill was moved from Zaandijk to Westfriesland in 1911. It had previously stood there as an oil mill called Het Vette Schaap. Quite a move, without a removal van.
The mill used to grind grain into flour. It remained in operation as a windmill until 1951. Following extensive restoration, De Stofmolen was restored to working order.
Yes, but by appointment only. The mill is located at Molenweg 1 in Wijdenes. So do plan ahead. That way, you won’t find yourself standing in front of a spinning sail and a closed door.
