The West Frisian Omringdijk has been winding its way around West Frisia for centuries. You cycle or walk past water, polders, villages and old towns. Sometimes with the wind right in your face. That’s all part of it. This is West Frisia at its most rugged.

What to expect.
You see water, clay, reeds and villages standing firm in their places. Cyclists whizz past. Seagulls hover above the water. Every now and then, all you can hear is the wind. The dyke is 126 kilometres long and, as you travel along it, tells the story of how Westfriesland has held its ground against the water. Not with grand words. Simply with earth, stone and perseverance.
Practical information
You decide for yourself how long you’ll be out and about. Even a short walk can be enough. If you’re cycling a longer stretch, make sure to allow plenty of time. The dyke runs through and past various towns, so parking options vary depending on your starting point. Dogs are allowed on many sections, but do check the local rules. Food and drink are mainly available in the villages and towns along the route. Accessibility varies from section to section, as some parts are narrow, high or uneven.
When are you welcome?
The dyke is an outdoor space, so you can visit it all year round. Do bear in mind the weather, traffic and any roadworks. In strong winds, you’ll feel it right in your face – Westfriesland doesn’t make a fuss about that.
Our tip for your visit
Start with a walk along the water’s edge, for example between Hoorn and Medemblik. You’ll immediately understand why that dyke is here. Do make sure to bring something warm with you, even when the sun is shining. The wind has a mind of its own here.
4.5
A beautiful route along the water, through polders, villages and old harbours. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of places to stop for a coffee or a short break. We had a strong headwind. Apparently, that’s all part of the experience. Highly recommended for cyclists and walkers who love the great outdoors.
The West Frisian Omringdijk is a historic dyke stretching 126 kilometres. It has been keeping the water out for some 800 years. A solid piece of engineering, then.
Certainly. Choose a short stretch or make it a proper long walk. The cycle route is approximately 156 kilometres. The Streekpad walking route is around 150 kilometres.
Water, polders, reeds and villages that stand firmly in their place. You’ll pass through Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen, amongst others. The wind comes free of charge.
