Who is this site for?
Oostereiland is ideal for anyone who wants to see Hoorn in a slightly different light. Not just a stroll down the high street, but a trip to the harbour, a taste of history and the town’s thick walls. You’ll come here for a film night, a museum visit, a drink, lunch or an overnight stay with a story to tell. It’s also handy if you want to take your time exploring Hoorn over the course of a day.

When will you be popping by?
Come during the day to visit the Museum of the 20th Century. It’s located on Oostereiland and is open on weekdays from 10.00 to 17.00. At the weekend, the museum is open from 12.00 to 17.00.
In the afternoon or evening, pop into Cinema Oostereiland. The cinema café is open almost every day, with varying opening times each day.
Staying overnight? Then Hotel Oostereiland will ensure you enjoy a good night’s sleep behind its thick walls. The hotel is within walking distance of the historic centre.

What can you expect?
You walk onto Oostereiland, surrounded by water. Brick, iron, a courtyard and the scent of the harbour. Inside, you can watch a film, step back into the last century or spend the night in a building with a history as a prison. Outside, Hoorn awaits: the harbour, the Hoofdtoren and the old town just round the corner. Not your run-of-the-mill day out. But one with real character.

Practical information
You can easily set aside half a day for Oostereiland. The cinema, museum and restaurants are all close together. The Museum of the 20th Century is at Krententuin 24. Cinema Oostereiland is at Oostereiland 25. Hotel Oostereiland is at Schuijteskade 5.
Visitors cannot park on Oostereiland itself. The nearest car parks are:

• 't Jeudje car park – approximately a 10 to 15-minute walk.
• De Nieuwe Wal car park (next to the fire station) – about a 10-minute walk.
• Visserseiland – about a 10 to 15-minute walk away.
• Westerdijk – about a 5-minute walk away, one of the nearest car parks.

When are you welcome?
The Museum of the 20th Century is open Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 17.00. On Saturdays and Sundays from 12.00 to 17.00. The museum is closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and King’s Day.
The Filmcafé at Cinema Oostereiland has extended opening hours. On Mondays and Thursdays, it opens at 12.00. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, it opens at 10.00. On Saturdays, it opens at 12.00. It usually closes between 8.00 pm and 11.00 pm.

Our tip for your visit
Don’t head straight back after your film or museum visit. Take a stroll past the harbour. From Oostereiland, you’ll be right by the water and the old town in no time. It’s particularly lovely at the end of the afternoon.
