At the De Oude Bakkerij Bakery Museum in Medemblik , you don’t just look back at the past. Here, you can knead, bake and taste. Discover the Dutch art of baking and watch the bakers at work.
As soon as the oven opens, you’ll know exactly what’s going on. They still bake the traditional way here. You can see how currant buns and filled biscuits are made. And when it comes to chocolate and confectionery, a different kind of craftsmanship comes into play.
Meanwhile, you’ll discover old tools, machines and techniques from the baking trade. This way, history isn’t served up in a dry, boring way. Much more enjoyable that way.
Just looking around? That would be a shame. Children can take part in activities, such as decorating biscuits, at any time. There are also demonstrations in the bakery and on chocolate and marzipan.

De Oude Bakkerij organises workshops and packages for adults, ranging from bread-baking to working with chocolate and sugar. Bookings must be made in advance via the website.
After all that baking, your stomach is bound to start rumbling. At the museum café Koekerij Cees de Boer, coffee, tea and treats from the bakery’s own oven are waiting for you.
And for home? In the museum shop, you’ll find biscuits, chocolate, traditional Dutch sweets and West Frisian currant bread. Locally sourced – straight into your bag.
Tip: do take that currant bun with you. It’ll still be delicious tomorrow. If it lasts that long.
